Keeping a Pool Deck Cool Enough to Walk On

By Espinosa Concrete, Inc.3 min read

A grey concrete pool deck in South Florida in July is not a comfort problem, it is a surface people cannot cross barefoot. Colour and texture are what change that, and they change it more than most people expect.

Colour does the heavy lifting. A light, reflective surface absorbs far less solar energy than a dark one, which is why traditional cool-deck finishes are pale. Going two or three shades lighter on a pool surround makes a bigger difference to how it feels underfoot than almost anything else you can specify.

Texture does the rest, in two ways. A sprayed, knockdown-textured coating puts thousands of tiny raised peaks between a foot and the slab, so less skin touches hot surface at any moment and air moves underneath. That same texture is what gives you grip when the deck is wet, which around a pool is the more important of the two benefits.

The practical route for an existing deck is a spray-deck or cool-deck coating applied over the concrete you already have. It goes over sound existing slabs, so you are not paying to demolish and re-pour, and it resets both the colour and the surface at once. What it will not do is fix a slab that is structurally failing or draining the wrong way — that has to be sorted first, because a coating follows the shape underneath it.

If your deck is too hot, too slick, or just tired, it is usually a coating job rather than a rebuild. Call Espinosa Concrete, Inc. at (786) 346-5579 and we will look at what you have got.
