Why Concrete Driveways Crack — and What Actually Prevents It

By Espinosa Concrete, Inc.4 min read

Concrete cracks. That is not a defect — it is what concrete does as it cures and as the ground under it moves. The question is never whether a slab will develop stress, it is whether that stress ends up in a control joint where you planned for it, or in a jagged line across the middle of your driveway.

The first thing that decides it is the base. Concrete has enormous compressive strength and very little tensile strength, which means it is superb at being pressed and poor at being bent. Lay it on soil that was not graded and compacted and you have built a slab that is going to be bent the first time the ground settles unevenly. Most of the driveways we are called out to replace early failed here, underneath, where nobody looked.

The second is joint layout. Control joints are deliberate weak lines that tell the slab where to crack. They need to be cut deep enough — roughly a quarter of the slab thickness — soon enough after the pour, and spaced sensibly for the thickness. Joints cut too shallow, too late or too far apart do not control anything, and the slab picks its own line instead.

The third is the pour itself: the right thickness for what will drive on it, the right mix for this climate, and curing that is not rushed. South Florida sun pulls water out of a fresh slab fast, and concrete that dries instead of curing ends up weaker at the surface than the same mix given a few days of proper care.

None of that is exotic. It is just the part of the job that takes time and does not photograph well. If you are getting quotes on a driveway, ask each contractor what they are doing about base preparation and joint spacing — the answers will tell you a lot.
